20 Low Sugar Recipes for Easter
Easter. Whether you celebrate the Resurrection of Jesus or simply have an Easter egg hunt and eat a lot of food, there will pretty inevitably be some sugar involved. Probably in the form of rather a lot of chocolate and cake.
Having seen Easter cake recipes that contain as much as 70g of free sugars per serve, I felt compelled to round up a nice long list of delicious Easter recipes you can indulge in while still remaining under the World Health Organisation’s recommended daily sugar intake. Since eating just one large milk chocolate big brand Easter egg will ring in at well over 100g of free sugars (that’s 4 times an adult’s recommended daily intake – and 10 times a child’s), you can see why having a few low sugar tricks ready for Easter might be a good idea!
And if you are looking for more recipes, tips, tricks, advice, encouragement and inspiration for Easter and all the other sugar-laden holidays and parties in the year ahead, why not take a look at our 7-day Party Survival course while it’s on sale? 7 days of audio & slide presentations with printable notes, exclusive recipes, tips & tricks and even access to a closed FB group for support, all in one affordable package – don’t miss out!
So here you go, 20 of my favourite low sugar Easter recipes ready for you to enjoy:
To start the day:
“Chicks & Bunnies” (Soft-Boiled Eggs with Bunny Soldiers) – get some Easter cookie cutters like these ones and make breakfast healthy but lots of fun! We love butter and Marmite on our soldiers (UK Marmite is sugar free but check ingredients elsewhere)
Pancetta Egg Cups – lots of lovely protein, healthy fats and greens in this one
Blueberry & Yogurt Sugar Free Scones
Dutch Baby with Strawberries & Pistachios – skip the powdered sugar or replace it with 1 tsp ground cinnamon
Vegan Coconut & Banana Pancakes – these dairy and egg free pancakes are my son’s all-time favourites; skip the sugar completely, they really don’t need it!
For the lunch:
Slow-Cooked Lamb with Sugar Free Mint Sauce
Roast Shoulder of Lamb with Blood Oranges – skip the 1 tbsp honey or use rice syrup instead to keep sweetener fructose free
Whole Baked Celeriac with Caramelised Onion Gravy (VEGAN)
Parmesan-Coated Swede (Rutabaga) Fries
Asparagus & Ricotta Filo (Phyllo) Tart – yes, yes, yes, it is asparagus time again! I LOVE them!
Punchy Spring Greens – a yummy, salty side dish
Potato Gratin – always a good side dish (swap all or some of the potatoes for sweet potatoes, beetroot or other root veg to make it different and more special)
For the treats:
(Practically) Sugar Free Chocolate Orange Hot Cross Buns
Homemade Easter Chocolates – (I am working on my own low sugar chocolates recipe which will be up soon!)
The Ultimate Indulgent Low Sugar Hot Chocolate
Low Sugar Profiteroles (I love these SOOOOOO much)
Sugar Free Strawberry Lemonade
I hope these recipes help you to restrict the incredible amounts of sugar that are often consumed at Easter. It is a feast day, and there is nothing wrong with a little indulgence, but if you want to avoid serious overconsumption and the inevitable highs and crashes, make your treats mostly low in sugar. Trust me, it makes it a far more enjoyable day for all involved! 😉
