30 Low Sugar Recipes for a Healthier Christmas | Raising Sugar Free Kids #christmas

Are you looking to have a slightly less unhealthy and sugar-packed Christmas season? Hoping to keep the kids’ sugar highs and crashes to a minimum? Trying to find out if having a healthier Christmas means compromising on flavour or decadence?

I am here to tell you you can eat all of the luxurious-tasting, indulgent, traditional Christmas food without going too overboard on sugar and unhealthy processed foods. It may require a little more planning, prepping and freezing, but it will be worth it to have delicious, easy Christmas recipes that delivers all the flavour for a fraction of the sugar!

Here are the 30+ low sugar recipes I am most excited about this Christmas:

Appetizers & Entrees

Sugar Free Antipasto Platter – you won’t find any chutneys or dried fruits on this platter, but you won’t even notice, it’s just so beautiful and delicious!

Christmas Tree Vegetable Platter – never have raw vegetables looked as appealing as this! 🙂

Mini BLT Cups – these adorable bitesize starters are perfect to start off a Christmas meal or party.

Kale & Roasted Cauliflower Salad – also great as a side dish, this salad is gorgeous. If you’ve never tried roasted cauliflower before, you are in for a treat.

Smorgasbord Platter – intended for Christmas leftovers, this smorgasbord platter is just as amazing on Christmas itself. Looks enticing but is full of healthy foods.

Rudolph’s Rocket Fuel – this orange soup is lovely, a perfect starter for the whole family, and especially for children. I love the name.

Main Course

Turkey, Bacon & Chorizo Bombe – this is what we are making for our Christmas lunch. All the decadence of Christmas flavours and meats, but no more sugary glaze than 1 tbsp of maple syrup (I’ll be using rice syrup) in the entire dish for 10! We made this last year for Christmas and my husband loved it so much, he requested the same thing this year.

Herbed Chicken with Beets & Brussels – the kind of main my daughter, an avid beetroot fan, would love. And no glaze or syrup in sight.

Quinoa-Stuffed Squash with Walnuts & Pomegranate Seeds – a perfect vegan main that will leave no one out on Christmas Day.

Lentil Loaf – perfect for a vegetarian or vegan guest. Go bigger and bolder with a puff-pastry wrapped lentil loaf, if you don’t mind a little extra effort.

Gordon Ramsay’s Roast Turkey with Lemon, Parsley & Garlic – a classic roast turkey recipe with no glazes or sugar.

Parsnip & Mushroom Barley Wreath – a seriously impressive vegetarian main.

Sides

Perfect Roast Potatoes – the best way to get perfect roasties every time.

Vegan Christmas Salad – this rainbow salad is full of colour and flavour and will light up any table.

Buttered Sprouts, Chestnuts & Bacon – my favourite Christmas side dish and the best way to serve sprouts, bar none.

Herb & Garlic Butter Smashed Sweet Potatoes – sweet, tasty, flavour-packed, and no sugar in sight. That’s my kind of side dish.

Sugar Free Cranberry Sauce – it wouldn’t be a Christmas dinner without some tasty (usually sugary) sauces, right?

Garlic Green Beans – I personally love my green beans so overcooked they are mushy and soft, but I know most people prefer a bit of crunch to them, and I must admit, these look delicious.

Desserts

Chocolate Cherry Tart – isn’t it beautiful?

Sugar Free Mince Pies – I’ve already made these so many times this year, they just never let me down. Easy, quick and a real crowd-pleaser.

Low Sugar Christmas Cake – this gluten free Christmas fruitcake is so low in sugar that you can use traditional sugary decorations without it being a super high fructose feast of a dessert. For a lighter, less sweet alternative, this fructose free Christmas cake is one I love, but it is not hugely sweet so is more for those who have been doing the whole “low sugar thing” for a while.

Christmas Fruit Tree – this is so impressive to look at, and perfect for children. Just fruit and toothpicks, but it looks amazing!

Low Sugar Chocolate Yule Log – a classic remade. So easy kids can make it and the decoration is a fun family activity, too.

Last-Minute Christmas Pudding – when making my sugar free mince pies, I often make extra mincemeat for the season. Some goes into stollen bites, my Christmas cake or more mince pies, but I’m saving a jar to make this last-minute Christmas pudding into a sugar free version! So to keep this pudding sugar free, use the low carb mincemeat from here.

Sugar Free Coconut Christmas Cake – my ultimate sugar free showstopper cake, topped with sugar free marshmallow frosting.

Drinks & After-Dinner Treats

Low Sugar Peppermint Hot Chocolate – easy to make as a big batch and completely delicious and Christmassy.

Sugar Free Mulled Wine – mulled wine or cider can be packed with sugar, so make your own (it’s mostly waiting and a bit of stirring) and enjoy a classic Christmas drink without the sugar.

Low Sugar Truffles – these are so easy and only use a few ingredients, but everyone will be thoroughly impressed that you made your own truffles and they are low in sugar!

Green Grinch Smoothies – such a cute idea for kids this Christmas.

Low Sugar Peanut Butter Cups – the peppermint version is perfect for Christmas as a kind of thin mint/After Eight equivalent.

+ one extra, as a gift from me to you: Low Sugar Stollen Bites – because, YUM!

MERRY CHRISTMAS everyone!

    1. Thanks Erica! I LOVE Buttered Side Up (I’ve been reading it since its Cooking for Seven days). It can be hard to keep sugar low over the holidays but I’ve discovered some good recipes and tricks over the last couple of years! 🙂
