Sweet Potato Mash

I shared my sugar free cranberry sauce with you today, but I have one more super-quick, super-easy and sugar free side to share with you before Thanksgiving: sweet potato mash.

This is about as easy as food gets, takes little time and virtually no prep, and it can be prepared in advance and reheated or simply cook for you on the day as you prepare other parts of the meal.

Normal potato mash can be a lovely side, but this takes that classic and makes it more flavoursome and nutritious. It is not cooked in a complicated fashion with sugar and pecans and all sorts of unhealthy and time-consuming additions, but is beautifully simple, cheap and healthy.

Sweet potatoes are nutritionally superior to traditional white potatoes (although potatoes, with their skins on, are a rich source of vitamin C and fibre so don’t discount a good ol’ baked potato!), not to mention, far tastier and, well, sweeter.

And if you see this too late for Thanksgiving? It is perfect for a simple Sunday roast, for bigger celebrations like Christmas, or simply puree (without seasonings or butter) in your food processor, freeze in 1 cup (250g) portions, and add to recipes to create natural sweetness, or use in any recipe that calls for pumpkin puree.

Easy, cheap, yummy, and totally sugar free.

Little hands can:

  • Wash the potatoes and place on a baking tray
  • Peel cooled potatoes
  • Mash!
